If you want a certain blessing from God, you have to ask – which is okay. But it often gets more complicated from that point on. In truth, it looks like idol worship all over again. Let me paint the picture for you.
You see, you have to ask in a certain way. Then you have to sacrifice by way of giving and sowing seeds. Then there is that matter of ensuring that you speak forth the results consistently each day. Do not forget also that you need to be well positioned to receive the blessing. If you are off by a few inches to the right or a little to the left, you are divinely screwed.
Oh! And you might need to throw in a fast too. In some cases, you have to sweat, scream, shriek and foam in the mouth all night. Yes; similar to the prophets of Baal. You might actually also have to leave your house and go, not to your church building, but to a literal high place – a “mountain” to do your fasting, sweating and screaming at a god who obviously has hearing problems or is really not interesting in blessing you (if not, he wouldn’t have so many hurdles put before you).
That is a lot of work, exertion and stress for a faith that is supposed to be founded and run on grace.
Yes; we might as well go back to idol worship. Or we need to get back to understanding this faith thing, for He said:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Are you resting or stressing in the name of faith? If we are going to continue to act this way, we might as well go back to idol worship. Because this god doesn’t look any different from those he replaced.
