There has been a separation at AFCON. The men have stood out; the boys have been sent home. However, at first glance, you would not have known which was which. The tournament favorites were Algeria, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Egypt. Well, of these teams, Ghana and Egypt are the only ones left. What a huge shame. I personally had high hopes for Algeria; they were the highest-ranked team in Africa prior to the tournament, of course. Well, they have crashed out now, without winning a single game. That’s just too bad.
Ivory Coast too was a huge disappointment in this tournament. They won the last edition of AFCON, with the likes of Yaya Toure and Gervinho leading the lines and driving the team. However, it looks like these guys did them a disservice by retiring from international football. This team lacked that driving leadership of Toure. Well, in attack they had Wilfried Zaha, Jonathan Kodjia and Salomon Kalou, but they failed to secure a victory for Ivory Coast.
However, it has not all been gloom in AFCON. Senegal are proving to be one of the biggest teams in Africa now, as they progressed to the next round with a game to spare. Even then, they still had that fight; they forced a draw with Algeria and knocked them out. Tunisia too have been awesome; they won their last game 4-2 against Zimbabwe. So far they have been in the highest-scoring matches of the tournament. I don’t know about you guys, but I think the AFCON trophy is going to end up with either Senegal or Tunisia.
Morocco, however, might have a say in that. They too have progressed to the quarterfinals. Their first match was a freak loss to DR Congo, but they have won every game since then. Furthermore, their matches have produced some of the most exciting football in the tournament. DR Congo to have been a revelation; they have not lost any game in their group. In fact, they finished top of their group, which included African heavyweights Togo. The so-called African heavyweights finished last. This is so disappointing, guys.
