There is no way around this: multiple skills will make you more valuable on the job. There was a time when being knowledgeable and/or skilled in one thing would make you a star. Those days are fast becoming a thing of the past. Specialisation won’t disappear entirely, but you will require more than one skill to excel in your field.
Have a look at the following video showing how a captivating movie scene was captured:
A video cameraman who is good only with the camera and nothing else would not qualify for this set. This set required someone with more skills than just being excellent with a camera. That is an example of what I mean. Many of the great scenes and angles that we see in movies are done because the cameraman is also a stunts-man.
The Age Of Multiple Skills Is Here
Let me give an example from the world of digital media. Years ago, to be a great content writer or blogger only required the ability to craft words excellently to connect with readers. Today, it has gone beyond that. Besides being able to write, you also need at least basic graphics skills so you can spice up your posts with catchy images. You also need some SEO and rich skills so you can create content that not only appeals to people, but also appeals to Google Search. After all, if your content cannot be found by those searching, of what use is it?
Another example, whether you are a banker, accountant, lawyer or teacher, adding digital skills to your arsenal gives you an edge and makes you more valuable. Add some other skills relevant to your work and you will be gold in the market.
Make Your Move Now
Do not forget it. The more skills you combine on the job, the more value you are able to deliver; the more creative you can be. Ultimately, you are of more value to your team than the person with less skills. The thing to do is look at your field and determine what extra skills you can acquire to make you a more valuable person in that field. Then go get it. Start now. Whatever you do, do not stay stagnant.
