Riyad Mahrez wins big at the CAF Awards
Last night, the CAF Awards gala went down at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, Nigeria. A lot of celebrities graced the event. Football stars from all over Africa, entertainment luminaries and the cream of society were there. There was a lot of entertainment on board, and it was a lot of fun. However, the biggest hits of the night were the awards.
Algeria and Leicester City forward Riyad Mahrez was the biggest winner at the CAF Awards; he was crowned the African Footballer of the Year. He dethroned Gabon and Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who had won it twice before. Nigeria and Arsenal Ladies striker Asisat Oshoala was the Women’s Player of the year. Also, Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi won the Most Promising Talent and Youth Player of the Year awards. Furthermore, President Muhammadu Buhari won the CAF Platinum Award. However, no Nigerian featured in the CAF Team of the Year.
Mikel completes his move to China
Meanwhile, John Obi Mikel, 29, has completed a move to China. Now calm down, everyone, let this sink in. Mikel Obi has left Chelsea, guys! Well, he had to go somewhere; he has not played a single match under Antonio Conte this season. At his age, players should be playing the best football of their lives. However, his choice of destination will leave some people shaking their heads. China again? This is yet another example of how the Chinese League is gradually supplanting the European leagues. They certainly have the means to attract all the world’s best football dudes.
However, Mikel’s case should not be looked at as a case of greed. Oscar left Chelsea to play in China, reportedly because of a huge salary. Carlos Tevez is the world’s highest-paid player now by virtue of his move to the Chinese League. Axel Witsel abandoned his longtime dream of playing for Juventus in favor of a big-money move to the Far East. Now Mikel has joined them. A lot of people are saying that footballers now just follow the cash. I think Mikel just followed the playing time; I know that the Tienjin TIDA will not sign him for such a pretty sum and just leave him on the bench. Good one, Mikel.
