If you were raised in church, you probably grew up being told that God’s love is the kind that does not expect anything in return. You probably believed it too. Hopefully, you will come to see how that statement is false in every way possible.
God demands that we love Him back. He demands obedience too. Surely, that is some expectation. No? Yes; God loved us before we were capable of loving Him. But He did it with expectations. He wanted Sons in return. He wanted a relationship. He wanted love back. He wanted obedience in return.
As a matter of fact, like everyone else with expectations, there is a penalty for not meeting up to expectations. Men cut off women who break their heart. Women dump men who break their hearts. God has damnation for those who break His heart…All of them have something in common – expectations unmet.
Is it not written that the only thing that God requires to be accepted by Him is that people believe on Jesus? When people do not believe, they do not meet up to His expectations. What does He say about those who do not believe? Here:
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. (John 3:18)
See? He condemns those who do not meet up to that requirement or expectation or whatever you want to call it. No; I do not see how that popular statement can be true in the face of everything that the Bible tells us about God.
If God loved without asking back, He wouldn’t have asked humanity to believe in Him, love Him in return or obey and follow Him to be accepted by Him. He would have loved the world regardless of what and not given Jesus as a condition for salvation. He would not have to send some to heaven for believing and some to hell for not believing.
As far as I can see from the Bible, It does not look like even God loves without expecting anything in return. Next time someone asks you to get into an intimate relationship without expecting anything in return because you should love like God, you know they’ve got it all wrong.
Yeah; I might end up burned at the stake for this….
God's love expects something in return
Like me, you probably grew up being told that God's love is the kind that does not expect anything in return. And like me, you probably believed it. Well, it isn't true.
